Whether you think they are overrated, the best band to ever exist, or are simply a Blur fan, the news of the return of English rock band Oasis has sent shock around the world. What better way to celebrate than listening to some past favorites, or maybe discovering something new?
Oasis’ conception began in Manchester, England in 1991 by two brothers, Noel and Liam Gallagher. The band is infamous for the brothers’ quarrelsome history. Even after achieving worldwide glory with the release of their second studio album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory (1995), their antics still continued. They fought each other verbally and physically in interviews, on stage, and insulted each other to the press. After countless years of feud, a backstage fight was enough to ignite the eventual breakup of the band in 2009. Their reunion which was announced in August of 2024 shocked the world as they even released tour dates for 2025. That being said, it would be the perfect time to begin listening to Oasis if you haven’t already, starting with their album, Definitely Maybe (1994).
Definitely Maybe (1994) was Oasis’ debut album that immediately grabbed the attention of music fans all around. It quickly became one of the most prominent records in British rock. Being one of the hit releases of the 90’s, the album includes some of their most iconic songs such as “Supersonic”, “Live Forever”, and “Rock n’ Roll Star.” Every song on the album has its own unique sound, which gives a special and emotional listening experience. Opening the album with “Rock n’ Roll Star” was a power move, as it really gives you a solid idea of what to expect from Oasis’ sound and image. Liam Gallagher’s raw vocals combined with a rough and loud guitar perfectly define the title of the song, as it showcases the classic rock n’ roll vibes. If you listen in chronological order, it is clear how fierce and energetic the album is until you get closer to the end and listen to tracks such as “Slide Away” and “Married with Children” which give a nice decent back down from the intensity at the beginning of the album. I personally would rate this album a 10/10. I really love the way it flows, and it is a no skips album for me. My favorite songs off this album are “Shakermaker” and “Cigarettes & Alcohol.”
“My favorite songs from Definitely Maybe would have to be “Digsy’s Dinner,””Married With Children,” and “Live Forever.” Anthony Fasano (’25) an Oasis fan, said. “Definitely Maybe is an incredible album and I would rate it a 9/10. I would have to say my favorite is (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? To me, that album is a rare 10/10 no skips album.” I also asked Fasano his thoughts on the tour dates.
“When Oasis announced their UK tour I was so excited and even contemplated flying to England if they decided to headline Glastonbury. Once the shows at MetLife Stadium were announced, I knew there was no way I would miss out on this. Trying to get tickets for them was the worst experience but after hours in the queue, I was able to get a singular ticket for September. I couldn’t be more excited and am counting down the days.”
Definitely not maybe, Oasis is back.
