Every year, 334 entertainment journalists representing 85 different countries and diverse backgrounds come together to choose the Golden Globe Nominees. Golden Globe Awards seek to acknowledge cinematic accomplishments in twenty-seven categories, including but not limited to Best Drama Motion Picture, Best Animated Motion Picture, or Best Performance by a Female or Male Actor in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture.
Wicked, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, had a smashing success at the nominations. Nominated for Best Motion Picture in a Musical or Comedy and Cinematic Box Office Achievement, the movie wouldn’t be itself without the two actresses. Erivo (portraying Elphaba) has been nominated for Best Performance By A Female Actor In A Motion Picture – Musical Or Comedy while Grande (portraying Glinda) was nominated for the Best Performance By A Female Actor In A Supporting Role In Any Motion Picture.
Wicked isn’t the only popular movie that has been nominated. Two animated sequels, Moana 2 and Inside Out 2 have been selected for Best Animated Motion Picture along with Flow, Memoir of A Snail, Wallace & Gromit, and The Wild Robot.
Sequels are not only featured in Animated Motion Pictures. Dune: Part Two is a nominee for Best Drama Motion Picture and Best Original Score after its release in March. Critics from Variety complained that the movie had been “snubbed,” but the misunderstanding was quickly cleared up by Cláudio Alves, a voting member of the Golden Globes. “Sadly, we could only vote for the films submitted by their distributors in that category. And only 16 films were actually submitted.” This highlights a broader issue of limited representation, as voters can only nominate films submitted by distributors. All in all, the Golden Globes of 2025 has its star: Emilia Perez. Starring Selena Gomez, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Zoe Saldaña on Netflix, this movie follows the path of a Mexican lawyer, touching themes of identity and morality while musical numbers are skillfully woven into the script. This musical-thriller is topping the ranks with 10 nominations, with The Brutalist and Conclave close behind.
Regardless of the film, picture, or movie, tune in to this year’s Golden Globe Awards on January 5th, 2025 at 8:00 PM EST to watch your favorite actors, actresses and directors come together to celebrate their successes.
