Triple C Book Review #13 : City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments) by Cassandra Clare

We’re Triple C: a dynamic trio of seniors (Kavya, Kailyn, and Anoushka), bonded by both a shared passion for literature and the coincidental charm of all having last names starting with the letter C. Our book review promises a diverse and engaging exploration of exciting books, and we invite fellow book lovers to join us on our literary journey!

When I say I finished this 400+ page novel in a mere three days, you know it was good. Starting the new year off strong, I decided to get back into longer series rather than stand-alone novels, and I found The Mortal Instruments series to be one of the more captivating series I’ve read.

If you’re a fan of Percy Jackson or Keeper of the Lost Cities, the Mortal Instruments series will be right up your alley. With its blend of magic, werewolves, vampires, and wardens, Cassandra Clare crafts a story that’s truly unforgettable.

The plot follows Clary Fray, a typical teenage mortal girl who discovers she has “the Sight” — the ability to see through glamours and perceive the true nature of things. Abandoned churches are revealed as magical institutions. Rundown restaurants are the hideout of vampires. But the most useful aspect is how she can see Shadowhunters: unique humans with angelic blood with the mission of killing demons. Ordinary humans (or “mundanes”) are oblivious to this magical world that exists right before them. Instead they interpret supernatural events as mundane occurrences, like angry adults or vicious dogs.

Clary’s journey in this hidden world begins when her mother is attacked by a demon, introducing Clary to the world of danger and magic. Along the way, she meets Jace, a Shadowhunter, who guides her through this new-found world, helping her put together the pieces of who she is. To uncover the truth of her past and race against time to find her mother, Clary must confront her blurry past and learn who her mother truly is — as well as what dark force is targeting her. And she must do it all before it is too late.

Reading this novel filled me with nostalgia for all the past fantasy series I’ve read throughout my childhood. The fantastical mystery and relentless plot twists kept me hooked — and trust me there are many!

However, I have to admit, the ending for this first book left me shook. I couldn’t resist searching for spoilers because I was so shocked. But rest assured, this series is definitely worth continuing. Just know that the next few books in this series are going to be an emotional rollercoaster.

Overall a solid 5/5 stars for The City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. I’m definitely invested in seeing where this series is going and highly recommend it to anyone interested.

Stay tuned for next time!
