Lines wrap around buildings as crowds of people swarm the entrances of a familiar grocery store. A bright red, inviting font spells the name: Trader Joe’s. With the recent surge in bird flu and spreading viruses, people have begun purchasing nonessential products. On April 8, lines formed at Trader Joe’s nationally, according to People. People eagerly waited for their chance to get their hands on the new, viral, and exclusive Trader Joe’s tote bags.

These limited-edition, spring-themed bags in pretty pastels are sold in four colors: delicate pink, baby blue, mint green, and lovely lavender. Meanwhile, the regular mini canvas tote bags come in colors navy, yellow, red, or forest green, all of which remain in stock.

“People camped out in front of stores hours before they opened, while others sent friends to grab the exclusive item for them,” The New York Times described. “On a few occasions, people appeared to wrestle or get into physical altercations.” This aggression to acquire tote bags led to the bags becoming even more coveted, sparking a frenzy among shoppers.

Retailers, initially shocked by the reaction, were quickly overwhelmed by the increasing interest. Priced at only $2.99, the bags quickly became an internet sensation. As word spread, social media platforms were flooded with pictures of people proudly displaying their newly acquired totes, turning them into a symbol of both style and exclusivity. However, people haven’t expected the unmanageable popularity of the mini canvas bags. As individuals hoped to purchase any number of bags, the bags were purchased at surprising speed. “Our stores receive deliveries daily, and they will be restocked daily for as long as they are available,” a Trader Joe’s spokesperson had commented on future restock plans in an interview with People. “Each store makes its own merchandising decisions, so only the store knows what is available. If customers have any questions about product availability, they can ask any Crew Member in their neighborhood store.”

Despite the cheap price at the store, the mini totes now resell for over $1,000. “One listing, which features a misprinted Trader Joe’s logo, is asking for nearly $2,000,” according to KXAN. As for the regular mini tote bags, individuals may manage to purchase one for $15-30 dollars off of eBay. Regardless, the price jump is still massive compared to the near $3 that shoppers can get in-store. What started as a simple seasonal release quickly turned into a high-demand, high-stakes hunt through the automatic doors of Trader Joe’s.
