On November 4, 2025, Congressional Representative Mikie Sherill won a decisive victory in the race for New Jersey’s governor, succeeding fellow Democrat Phil Murphy. Sherill’s victory came alongside major election results for Virginia’s governor and New York City’s mayor, won by Abigail Spanberger and Zohran Mandani, respectively. With Sherill now being the governor-elect of N.J., she is stepping away from the US House of Representatives to fully assume her new office. Sherill’s departure is a revolutionary moment in her political career as well as a significant victory for the Democratic Party, as New Jersey will hold a Democratic governor for three consecutive terms—the first since the 1960s.

Sherill’s victory resulted from a tight race with Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli, who was also endorsed by President Trump. The outcome of the elections seemed unclear for the majority of the race. However, Sherill ultimately took victory by over 400,000 votes as she took 56.6% (around 1,860,000) of the total votes while Ciattarelli took 42.8% (around 1,400,000) of the votes as reported by The New York Times. Collectively, more than 3.2 million votes were reported across New Jersey.

It’s safe to say that the pathway to Sherill’s success is far from typical. Graduating from the US Naval Academy in 1994 with a Bachelor’s, Sherill spent almost 10 years as a Navy pilot and also served as a Russian policy officer during her journey to the governorship, as outlined on her official biography. After leaving the Navy in 2003, Sherill pursued a law degree at Georgetown University and eventually became a U.S. attorney. She was first elected to New Jersey’s 11th Congressional district in 2018, where she has earned a reputation as an effective Democratic legislator since then. In 2023, Sherill was ranked as the “most bipartisan New Jersey elected official” by Common Ground Committee, a nonpartisan non-profit organization.

During her seven-year tenure in Congress, Sherill was a part of two committees/subcommittees, namely the House Armed Services Committee and the House Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party. In both, she strategically utilized her military background from the Navy to engage in defense and security policymaking.

Sherill will officially take office as the NJ governor on January 20, 2026. However, Sherill plans to resign from the House quickly as she vacates her spot for the next congressional representative. Earlier this week, Sherill confirmed during a speech to the House that she plans to leave via resignation next week, declaring that “this will be my last speech in this chamber… my parting message to Jersey is, thank you.”

Many Democratic candidates are seeking to replace Mikie Sherill’s spot in Congress, hoping to continue New Jersey’s now-well-settled reputation as a blue state. As reported on The Philadelphia Inquirer, Governor Phil Murphy will have around 70 to 76 days to call a special primary election and 64 to 70 days after that to call a general election following Sherill’s resignation. Among those who hope to replace Sherill include former Congressman Tom Malinowski, political strategist Brendan Gill, who now lives in Montclair, Sherill’s hometown, and former member of Morris Township Jeffrey Grayzel.

During her final speech as a congressional representative, Sherill called for America to stand strong, and “don’t give up on the ship”—following a famous naval motto. Now, she turns the page for both New Jersey and America as she prepares for her next mission as NJ’s governor.
