Top 10 Movies to Get into the Halloween Spirit
October 31, 2019
Halloween is just around the corner! And what’s Halloween without trick-or-treating? I’ll tell you: sad. But for those of you who believe you’re “too cool” or are deemed “too old” for trick-or-treating, it doesn’t have to be sad! Instead of just sitting at home and twiddling your thumbs on Halloween night, you can do other activities to get into the spirit: carve a jack-o’-lantern, bake those Pillsbury shape cookies (you know the ones), or go to a haunted house. While none of these activities can even amount to that joyous wonder of walking for miles and getting candy from strangers, there’s something you can do that comes close: embark on a horror movie marathon. Here are ten movies to get you started.
- Orphan
Orphan is not your typical ghost/vampire/werewolf horror movie but rather a psychological thriller. During every haunting second of the film, you’re going to be sitting at the edge of your seat while hairs stand erect on the back of your neck.
- The Conjuring
Based on a true story, The Conjuring is the first and the best of its franchise. For those who enjoy a ghost story, this is for you. For those who don’t like sleeping, this is also for you.
- Coraline
Whoever coined the phrase “cute as a button” clearly never saw Coraline. Even though it is meant to be a kids movie, it’s terrifying. Yet, it’s still somehow enjoyable for all ages.
- Saw
To be honest, the first time I saw Saw, I crapped my pants. In my defense, I was only a year old. Unfortunately, I cannot use that same excuse for when I crapped myself the second and third time I saw it.
- Carrie
Carrie is an absolute classic. Of course, I am talking about the original film, not the 2013 remake, but feel free to watch that if you want to be extremely disappointed. The original is just so creepy, yet so brilliant.
- The Sixth Sense
Another classic, The Sixth Sense is basically just one plot twist after another. Good luck piecing yourself together once you finish the movie, as you will be mentally and physically discombobulated. Jaw? Dropped. Stomach? Sunk. Brain? Scrambled.
- Twitches
Twins separated at birth learn of and find each other once they’re teenagers, and then they work together to save the world; Twitches is basically the darker version of The Parent Trap. For anyone who misses Disney Channel at its peak, this movie is perfect for you.
- Hocus Pocus
For you scaredy cats out there who don’t like horror movies, Hocus Pocus is your perfect match. It puts you into that Halloween spirit while making you laugh endlessly, as opposed to hiding underneath the covers.
- The Shining
Creepy twins? Creepy typewriter? Creepy everything? The Shining checks off all the boxes. It is undoubtedly one of the most classic horror movies in history and must be watched at least once in a lifetime. What’s a better time to watch it than during Halloween?
- The Nightmare Before Christmas
Topping off the list is a Tim Burton classic and an absolute Halloween staple. Something about singing “This Is Halloween” at the top of your lungs just gives you such a rush that nothing else can, not even the insane amount of sugar you consume on Halloween night.
And there you have it—1o movies that’ll have you feeling spooky in no time.
