Many students at THS aspire for a successful career, such as becoming the CEO of a big, fancy company, but how does one dive into the rigorous business world?
The Distributive Education Clubs of America, also known as DECA, has recently peaked in popularity at THS, with over 170 club members enrolled this year. DECA is a business club that provides students with opportunities to improve their leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills through written exams, role-plays, and quiz bowls. Besides the educational benefits of the club, DECA members are also able to experience new places and meet new people with competitions being held in various locations. Last year, several THS students competed in states through a three-day trip to Atlantic City, and participated in another conference in DisneyWorld for nationals. Through these nationwide events, students are able to win medals, scholarships, and cash rewards.
The masterminds behind the organization and success of Tenafly’s most prominent club are Mr. Fabian Alesandro and Mr. Frank Manziano. The two club advisors take the opportunity to promote DECA whenever they can by highlighting the valuable skills one can gain from joining. “The interpersonal skills transcend just business and help you later in life, if it’s college or your professional careers,” Alesandro said.
Additionally, DECA is emphasized as a club that benefits everyone, not just those who are interested in a business career. “Business skills are vital to everyone, whether you pursue business or not,” DECA president Jack Israel (’24) said.
The next step for our school’s DECA members is preparing for the upcoming conference in January. To help students freshen up their business skills for the new school year, THS will be holding the annual DECA night next Thursday, December 7th, at 6:00 p.m. in the library. During DECA night, students are able to participate in competition role-play simulations with Tenafly parents as the judges that critique and improve student work. Through this event, DECA members are able to gain the practice experience needed to get them ready for the real deal: Regionals!
