Yuan Yuan Tan, a highly esteemed figure in the world of ballet, has captivated audiences with her grace, elegance, and exceptional talent throughout her notable career. Born on June 21, 1976, in Shanghai, China, Tan began her dance journey at a young age, showing a natural gift and passion for the art form. Now, after 29 years on the stage and after having become the San Francisco Ballet’s longest-running star, she has retired.

Her early training in Chinese classical dance provided a solid foundation for her future achievements and journey. At 11, Tan joined the Shanghai Dance School, where she refined her skills under dedicated instructors. Not long after, her remarkable talent caught the eye of choreographer Helgi Tomasson, who extended an invitation to join the San Francisco Ballet School.

In 1995, Tan made her professional debut with the San Francisco Ballet, quickly rising to become one of the company’s principal dancers. Her performances earned widespread acclaim, establishing her as one of the most talented ballerinas of her generation.
