Each year, as the holiday break approaches, the school buzzes with excitement. However, it’s not only the long break from school that has everyone eagerly anticipating the season. The staff luncheon, a beloved annual tradition, has become a cornerstone of Tenafly High School’s staff culture, bringing teachers, administrators, and faculty together to celebrate the close of another successful year.
From the aroma of excellently prepared dishes to tables adorned with festive decor, the luncheon is far more than just a meal. It’s an opportunity for the staff to come together and feel the warmth of appreciation for their dedication to making the school a better place.
“It’s nice to feel appreciated,” said Ms. Salamone, a teacher of Physical Education and Driver’s Education. She described the annual luncheon as something truly unique, stating, “There is nothing like it.” Comparing it to other school events, she added, “They go all out for this, and I don’t even know how I would compare it to anything else.”
For Salamone and many of her colleagues, the luncheon is a highly anticipated occasion. “This is why so many people look forward to it—the food, how the HSA (Home & School Association) caters to us, everything is just amazing,” she explained, showcasing how much the teachers value this thoughtful gesture. It’s not just a meal but an experience that leaves teachers feeling truly recognized for their hard work.
“Sometimes, some of the staff alumni will come back and return to the school… that’s always very nice,” said Mr. Rendell, head of the science department. These reunions offer an additional layer of connection to the school’s history and people.
Rendell particularly enjoys the fun, lighthearted energy of the event, noting how eagerly everyone races to the food. “It’s always fun to see that the staff gets down there, including myself sometimes, early to get to the food first,” he said with a laugh. There’s a sense of friendly competition as everyone tries to snag their favorite dishes.
He also expressed his appreciation for the parents, saying, “It’s nice to interact with the parents who are always just so wonderful… They bring so much delicious food.” The essential role of parents in making the luncheon a truly special occasion highlights the strong sense of community that defines Tenafly High School. Ultimately, for Rendell, the luncheon is more than just a break from work; it’s a cherished tradition that brings together staff, parents, and alumni, fostering a sense of community and appreciation. As he put it, “It’s probably the highlight of the year for the staff of all the events that we have.”
Mr. Alesandro, a teacher of Personal Financial Literacy and leader of the DECA club, shared his thoughts on the annual luncheon and what makes it so special. When asked about his favorite part of the event, Alesandro quickly said, “What stands out the most is the food and the camaraderie.” The luncheon provides an opportunity to connect with colleagues in a more relaxed, social atmosphere. The luncheon also offers opportunities to connect with teachers from other departments. “I get to talk to some people that I usually don’t get to talk to,” he noted, highlighting how the event helps build relationships that might not form during the regular school day. It’s a chance to step outside of departmental lines and get to know colleagues better in an informal setting.
As for why he believes the luncheon is important for the school community, Alesandro said, “It helps bring us together during the holiday season.” It’s a moment for the staff to pause, reflect, and bond before the busy holidays take over.
When asked about his favorite dish, Alesandro smiled and replied, “All of it,” with a wink, showing just how much he enjoys the variety of homemade food provided by the parents. In fact, what makes this event stand out from other school gatherings is the personal touch. “It’s more personalized, and all the parents cook the food themselves,” he explained, emphasizing how the effort and care put into the meal make it feel even more special.
Mr. Alesandro also shared a funny memory from a past luncheon: “There was a teacher many, many years ago who drank a whole container of gravy.” While the reason behind this unusual act remains a mystery, it’s a story that adds humor and charm to the event’s history.
Lastly, when asked how the luncheon makes him feel appreciated as a teacher, Alesandro said, “When someone puts in their heart and soul into something, it makes you feel good.”
The annual staff luncheon is a celebration of community, appreciation, and connection. From the delicious, homemade food provided by parents to the relaxed conversations and laughter-filled memories with colleagues, the event stands as a reminder of the strong bonds within the school. As teachers, administrators, and parents come together to share in this tradition, they not only mark the end of the year but also create lasting connections that help shape the welcoming, supportive atmosphere that defines the Tenafly High School community.
