Vegetables, a part of everyday life, provide us with necessary vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, but they are just vegetables. We dread eating them as kids, and even as we get older, eating them does not become any more enjoyable. But what if vegetables were more than just the necessary but boring food that everyone dreads eating? What would vegetables be like if they were humans? How would they act?
Broccoli:
Broccoli is the ruler of the vegetable garden, and if human, the “it girl.” Broccoli is sassy and sarcastic; you don’t want to get too close to it, or your secrets might be spilled. Disgust, one of the emotions in Inside Out, hates broccoli, but ironically, if Broccoli were human, it would be just like Disgust. Though stubborn, Broccoli is hardworking, ensuring that it always gets what it wants. Broccoli is an “ends justify the means” kind of person, so if you’re in its way, make sure to move back or it will whip its full head of hair right at you.
Cauliflower:
Cauliflower is the sidekick to Broccoli; it does as Broccoli says and is very adaptable. Just like its bland taste, its personality is boring, but it will always be a good friend. Back in the day, Henry Clay was known as the Great Compromiser, but the modern-day Great Compromiser is Cauliflower. It makes sure to keep everyone happy, even if that means sacrificing its own wants or feelings. Though Cauliflower has the same big hair as Broccoli, Cauliflower holds its hair gelled back, making sure to get out of everyone’s way.
Carrot:
Carrot stands out from the rest with its ginger complexion and bold look. Carrot is definitely stuck-up and hard to impress, but also very independent, which is admirable. It doesn’t follow the crowd and surely doesn’t feed into the Broccoli hype. In fact, Carrot is so independent that it’s sometimes hard to find it, as it is often off on random side-quests. Carrot is the smartest in the garden and will have the most success, so its hard work and arrogance will pay off!
Artichoke:
Artichoke is laid-back, very interesting, and personable. With endless stories, Artichoke has many layers to peel back, allowing you to learn something new each day. Artichoke is a complex person, so as you unveil new layers, you get closer to its heart, which is open and honest. Artichoke’s outgoing personality allows it to befriend those who are different; in fact, Artichoke’s best friend would be the common fungus, Mushroom. Mushroom and Artichoke share a calm, stop-and-look-around attitude. This attitude makes Artichoke a great listener, so if you ever have a hard day, Artichoke will be there to talk about it.
Spinach:
Spinach is the health freak that you know and love. While off-putting at first, once you get to know Spinach, you learn to admire its energetic, almost addictive, personality. Spinach wakes up at the crack of dawn to do a quick Pilates class before heading to Whole Foods for a pressed juice. The one downside to Spinach is how competitive it is. On one hand, the competitive nature of Spinach is a good thing; it will push you to be the best version of yourself. On the other hand, it is tiring to keep up. Spinach is awesome, but definitely not for everyone, especially those who think a participation trophy is necessary for everything.
Potato:
Last but certainly not least, we have Potato. Like Carrot, Potato stands out, but for entirely opposite reasons. To be honest, Potato doesn’t do much of anything. It likes to watch comedy films in the dark all day, every day, certainly living up to the stereotype of being a “couch potato.” Other vegetables don’t want to hang out with Potato because of its unhealthy habits, so Potato has found friends in other aisles… like the bakery. But don’t let Potato’s laziness fool you; the high adaptability of Potato makes it equipped to handle any situation (as long as it doesn’t involve running).
Though you probably don’t put much thought into vegetables, they are complex and varied, making them more similar to humans than you may have thought. Whether you relate more to Potato or Cauliflower, there is a vegetable out there for everyone. So, which vegetable do YOU resonate with?
