The gym buzzed with nerves and excitement as the Tenafly Varsity Volleyball team walked into the NVOT gym on Monday, September 15. For years, Northern Valley Old Tappan had been one of the reigning forces in the league, dominating the 2024 Bergen County Tournament Championship and holding one of the longest winning streaks in the county. But this time, Tenafly came ready to challenge history. In front of a packed crowd of students, parents, and athletes, the Tigers not only battled NVOT point for point, but ultimately swept the Golden Knights, marking a monumental moment in Tenafly volleyball history.
The Tenafly volleyball team has come a long way since its early beginnings. Led by Coach Jeffrey Koehler, the team has steadily built a reputation for producing strong teams in recent years. What began as a small program eventually became a competitive force within Bergen County, with the Tigers known for their unique style and powerhouse coaching.
In two straight sets, the team secured a steady win over NVOT, relying on consistent kills and communication.
Captain Mia Bareket (’27) said the victory carried more meaning beyond the score.
“This match gave us confidence and showed the kind of team we’re becoming,” she said. “While it was a huge win, we keep reminding ourselves that it was only one game and hopefully we can keep this energy up for the rest of the season.”
Co-captain Ryan Liles (’27) agreed, adding, “We went up against a strong team, but everyone on our side stepped up and played their best. Our energy, teamwork, and focus carried us through the game, and the win showed how much we’ve grown this season. We’re ready and excited for the games still ahead.” The two junior captains paved the way for a fresh new season, leading the Tigers as the starting setter and middle.
The Tenafly spotlight doesn’t just stop at the players. Koehler shared his experience after the tense game: “It’s always awesome beating a great team like Old Tappan. Over the last 25 years they are consistently one of the best teams in the state. Being a very young team, it’s easy to get complacent but the captains are trying very hard to keep everyone focused as we get ready for Counties and State Tournaments.”
The Tigers’ growing success has also been recognized and featured elsewhere. The team’s starting outside hitter and North Jersey Volleyball Player of the Week nominee Lexi McGinty (‘28) was featured in a recent article. Greg Tartaglia, a sports reporter for NorthJersey.com, listed her stats from the week with “59 kills, 42 digs, 38 service points and 15 aces.”
The Tigers look forward to returning to their court when the Tenafly gym renovation is completed.
