In recent months, across the world, there have been many incidents of people destroying and burning Teslas, a trend seemingly growing in frequency.
Many people have been doing this to target CEO Elon Musk for his political views and public behaviors. This may be because their values don’t align with the beliefs of Musk, or because of the labor violations that Tesla has been accused of. For this reason, there has been a large number of incidents following the purposeful damaging of this car brand.
Musk has been the target of an influx of backlash after his affiliation with Trump and his involvement with the DOGE, the Department of Government Efficiency. A movement called “Tesla Takedown” was started to protest against Musk and his company. Over 200 demonstrations took place on Saturday, March 29 to campaign. These operations were mainly peaceful, but some took it out of hand.
The most recent incident happened on March 31. Seventeen cars from the company were destroyed at a Tesla dealership in Rome. Firefighters had to work for hours to put out the flames, and the lives of the employees were put at risk. Musk himself referred to this as “terrorism” through his social media platform, according to The Guardian. However, this isn’t all. The Guardian explains that on Saturday in Ottersberg, Germany, another seven cars were burned at a Tesla dealership, and on Monday, two Tesla stores in Sweden were vandalized.
Another recent incident involving the defacing of Teslas was done by activist and arsonist Paul Kim, according to CNN. He allegedly wrote the words, “RESIST” in pink spray paint on the front doors of one of the companies’ facilities in Las Vegas. He then shot at the vehicles and set them ablaze using Molotov cocktails. This has been a prime example of just exactly how people are destroying the Teslas and of what extent they are going to. People have been straying from the idea of peaceful protests and instead are resorting to the destruction of these vehicles.
These interactions to destroy the cars and operations of Tesla have been used as a way to express many people’s frustrations against Elon Musk. However, this has proven to be dangerous and unsafe for the people exposed to this environment. Vandalism and destruction of these cars have been especially more common. Most news of this started after Trump’s presidency, and there have already been multiple stories of this in March and April.
We have yet to see the future of these cars and how people will continue to react to them.
