As the leaves turn brown and fall on the ground, leaving the trees barren, our town begins to turn into hues of brown, orange, and red, there is nothing better to accompany your cup of hot-chocolate and cozy blanket, than a great book to get lost in. Given this, I have compiled a list of fall reads for each popular genre, accommodating anyone’s tastes, to delve into for the spooky season.
Sci-Fi
-
Red Rising book cover Red Rising by Pierce Brown
This epic novel is set on the planet Mars during a time when tyrants ruled the galaxy. Our main character, Darrow, is part of the lowest class in this world’s social hierarchy. After he loses someone close to him to the cruel government, he sets on a path of revenge. However, he might have to become his enemy in order to destroy it. I will forever be jealous of anyone who can read this book for the first time, because it truly changed my brain chemistry. This book is filled with many twists and turns that will make you stay up all night to finish it.
- Dune by Frank Herbert
For those who haven’t already seen the amazing movie adaptation of this book, in Herbert’s novel Dune, Paul Atreides is pulled into schemes of power and betrayal after his family is given control of Arrakis, a desert planet that produces the universe’s most precious resource: spice. As Paul struggles to survive betrayal and war, he begins to realize he may be destined for a role far greater than himself. I struggle to put into words the effect this book had on me. Outside of loving the plot, I harbor a great love for this story due to its beautifully-philosophical writing and complex character arcs.
Fantasy

- Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber
When Evangeline’s love of her life informs her he is marrying another girl, she runs to strike a deal with the notorious Prince of Hearts in order to get the happily-ever-after she’s always wanted. But the prince has his own plans for Evangeline, which I won’t ommit because they are plot spoilers. This book had me in a choke hold from the very first chapter. One of the most memorable, stand-out parts of this book is the atmospheric, fairy-tale-like writing Garber exhibits.
- Fourth Wing by Rebecca Ross

If you haven’t read this bestselling phenomenon yet, this is your sign. After Violet Sorrengail is forced to enter Basgiath War College, where survival depends on bonding with a dragon, or dying in the attempt. Amid ruthless trials, and deadly rivals, she discovers secrets that could shatter her world and ignite a rebellion. This is THE book to get you back into reading, or out of a slump. It is fast paced, and balances political and romantic intrigue very well.
Mystery/thriller
- A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson
This modern-day mystery follows High schooler Pippa Fitz-Amobi decides to dig into a long-closed murder case in her town for her senior project. What begins as a curious investigation quickly unravels into something far darker, with secrets and lies around every corner. This book had me completely hooked with its addictive pacing and constant cliffhangers. If you’re looking for something that will have you saying “just one more chapter” until it’s 2 a.m., this is it.
- The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
When average teenager Avery Grambs unexpectedly inherits the fortune of a billionaire she’s never met, she’s thrust into the world of the wealthy Hawthorne family. To claim her prize, Avery must live in their sprawling mansion—filled with puzzles, riddles, and heirs who aren’t exactly thrilled about her existence. I couldn’t stop flipping the pages; the riddles kept my brain buzzing while the drama felt straight out of a Netflix show. If you want a story that blends mystery, high-stakes family drama, and just a touch of romance, this is a perfect pick.
Classics
- The Secret History by Donna Tartt
The Secret History Book Cover
A dark academia masterpiece, this novel follows the story of a tight-knit group of eccentric classics students at a small New England college, who slowly spiral into obsession, betrayal, and ultimately murder. Tartt’s writing is atmospheric and haunting, pulling you deep into the twisted beauty of academia and the consequences of unchecked desire. This book is not just a read; it’s a whole new experience. It is one of the stories that lingered with me long after I closed the last page.
- The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
Set in the dystopian republic of Gilead, women are stripped of their rights and reduced to roles assigned by the state, with fertile women forced into slavery as handmaids. The story follows Offred, one of the handmaids imprisoned in her society, who quietly navigates her oppressive world while daring to hope for something more. This book is chilling in the best way possible. It makes you think about freedom, power, and resilience long after you finish. Atwood’s sharp prose was unforgettable for me, and this is a must-read for fans of dystopian literature.
- Beowulf

One of the oldest stories ever told, Beowulf is an epic poem recounting the hero Beowulf’s legendary battles against monsters like Grendel and the dragon. Its author still remains unknown despite the story’s wide, global acclaim. It is a story of courage, destiny, and the eternal clash between light and darkness. Despite its age, the story still feels larger than life and incredibly powerful. Reading it for the first time felt like stepping into the roots of storytelling itself.
Romance
- My Roommate is a Vampire by Jenna Levine
When struggling artist Cassie finds herself in need of a cheap apartment, she stumbles into a deal too good to be true: rooming with Frederick J. Fitzwilliam, who happens to be an actual vampire. What begins as an awkward arrangement blossoms into an unexpectedly charming romance, filled with quirky banter and undeniable chemistry. This book was such a delight. It’s cozy, sweet, and hilariously self-aware. If you need something lighthearted that still makes your heart race, this is the perfect comfort read.

- First Time Caller by B.K. Borison
This adorable romance follows the relationship between a late-night radio host and the caller who keeps phoning in. As their conversations grow more personal, the line between stranger and soulmate begins to blur. I loved how unique and heartfelt this story felt. It’s a slow burn filled with wit, vulnerability, and the kind of romance that sneaks up on you. It’s the book equivalent of a warm cup of tea on a rainy day.
