Hidden along the busy streets of Fort Lee, in a small shopping center, is The Gyro Project, a restaurant that opened up on July 5, 2023. From the moment you walk in, the scent of grilled meats and spices brings you back to Greece. But does this new, local Greek restaurant live up to its name, or is it simply another spot trying too hard to be popular?
The Gyro Project, located at 2151 Lemoine Avenue, combines the convenience of fast-casual dining with a pleasing atmosphere.
George Tenedios and Spiro Kokkosis came up with the idea of The Gyro Project. Tenedios also founded Manhattan’s salad chain Fresh&Co, and Kokkosis owns several Time Square staples, including Majestic Deli and The Times Eatery. What inspired them to create this restaurant is their Greek heritage and their desire to embrace it, according to Daily Voice.
There are many types of dishes The Gyro Project offers, including “Greek mezedes, specialty fries, pita and bowls, salads, a range of entree platters, feta-brined whole-bird rotisserie chicken, extensive traditional sweet and savory Greek bakery items, and a full froyo program,” according to QSR.
For desserts, they also offer other traditional Greek sweets like loukoumades, which are doughnut holes that “are fried and generously drizzled with honey then dusted with cinnamon,” Mia Kouppa reports.
Aside from Tenedios and Kokkosis’s location in Fort Lee, they also opened up another restaurant at The Junction at Gateway Center in Newark. This restaurant in Newark offers the same menu and casual dining. After that, in April 2025, they opened another one on the Upper West Side, with plans for a fourth location in Kips Bay at the beginning of this summer, according to Estiator.
According to the reviews on The Gyro Project website, many customers comment on the nice ambiance, service, and variety of food options. Others also comment that they love the “build your own bowls” and that they find it delicious.
The Gyro Project is in between traditional Greek food and modern dining preferences. With its service quality, authenticity, and customer experience, it has become a notable addition to Fort Lee’s culinary scene.
