This week, November 16th through the 18th, the school will be performing Our Town by Thornton Wilder. The play consists of three acts that feature the life of a small suburban town called Grover’s Corners in New Hampshire. The set is comprised of a few simple platforms and chairs, but the message of the show is far more complex. Each act of the performance showcases the most important points in a person’s life. The play stresses the themes of life, death, and community.

This play was a challenge to the cast of 21 actors, who were determine to put on the best performance. The set of the show is one of the simplest that has ever been constructed on the Collins-Tall Auditorium’s stage. With very little set and few props, the actors have to be the main subject of the show. There are also few set changes, meaning the actors have to be onstage for almost the entire duration of the show.

Scene from Our Town

The play takes place in a small town similar to the suburbs of Tenafly. The director of the show, Samuel Ahn-Cooper, felt that this show was perfect to exhibit how closely connected citizens are in a tiny, remote location. “Tenafly is a tiny suburb like Grover’s Corners. A lot of people live similar lives even though it takes place in the 1900’s and this is 2017. But the show is about the daily activities of towns people just like us.” said Mr. Ahn-Cooper, when asked why he chose the play Our Town. The play is a production that anyone can relate to that lives in the Bergen County region. It encompasses the humorous simplicities of family life and the disconsolate aspects of growing old.

Ariel Fromm plays the female lead, Emily Webb

The show displays an important message pertaining to each individual’s life. It allows the audience to take a small break from their own lives and immerse themselves in the delightful town of Grover’s Corners .“This show allows you to appreciate the life you live and the fact that you only get one to life to live. It makes you cherish the people who love you and the people you love.” said Ariel Fromm (‘18), who plays the lead female character, Emily Webb. Our Town is set to leave viewers with a lasting impression and teach them a little something about life.

But enough about how great the show is going to be. Come. Escape abit and experience the quaint town of Grover’s Corners starring some of the most talented kids in the school.
