Up the Met steps, the theme “Costume Art” was displayed through a striking mix of creativity and spectacle, where every look embodied a different portrayal of the theme. On Monday, May 4, fashion went beyond clothing and dived into something much bigger: a powerful expression of art that captured attention and explored individuality. The attendees of the 2026 Met Gala wore both shocking and spot-on outfits to celebrate and raise money for the new exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Hosted by Anna Wintour since 1995, the exclusive invite-only event has transformed into a major pop-culture moment that blends art, technology, and entertainment.
This event takes place every year on the first Monday of May to mark the opening of the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition. Since the theme this year centered around art, guests arrived as if they belonged in a gallery rather than on the red carpet.
“The show—inaugurating the Met’s new, nearly 12,000-square-foot Condé M. Nast Galleries—considers depictions of the dressed body from across the Met’s curatorial departments, pairing garments with art objects spanning some 5,000 years,” Vogue explained. Objects in “Costume Art” are divided into a “series of thematic body types,” ranging from the “Naked Body” to the “Classical Body,” showing how the theme can be expressed differently based on interpretation.
Some favorite looks of the night included Emma Chamberlin, Hailey Bieber, Beyoncé, SZA, and Anok Yai. Chamberlain wore a hand-painted Mugler gown inspired by an archived butterfly dress from the fashion house. She took the idea of paint on a canvas and turned it into fashion. Bieber wore a 24-karat gold molded Saint Laurent bodice over a bold blue dress, fusing sculpture with couture. Co-chair Beyoncé wore a skeleton-inspired dress with a feathered train by Olivier Roustieng, heavily inspired by the 1944 lithograph Visitor by Louisiana-born Creole artist Caroline Durieux. SZA wore a custom Bode design based on the “Classical Body,” Art Nouveau, and the Viennese artistic collective Wiener Werkstätte, featuring more than 100 yards of vintage fabric. Lastly, Anok Yai took a different approach and used the idea that “fashion is art” to display a message of hope and strength in an often troubled world. Balenicaga transformed her into a “living statue” inspired by the Mater Dolorosa (Mother of Sorrows) and the Black Madonna.
On the other hand, most of the men at the Met Gala played it safe, sticking to leather, structured silhouettes, and somewhat artistic suits. The standouts included A$AP Rocky, Jeremy Pope, and Bad Bunny. Rocky wore a custom bubblegum-pink Chanel robe paired with an apple-shaped clutch, blending high fashion, personal design, and artistic homage. Pope wore a pearl-covered jacket from archival Vivienne Westwood that sharply defined his torso.
“The duality felt very aligned with how I understand myself as an artist and as a Black man trying to navigate and hold space for legacy, visibility, and truth specifically in these types of spaces,” Pope said to GQ.
Finally, Bad Bunny may not have looked very fashionable, but his transformation into an elderly man got everyone talking. He wore a custom Zara suit complete with prosthetics, gray hair, and a cane to embody the “aging body” focus of the exhibition.
As the final guests ascended the iconic steps, the 2026 Met Gala solidified its reputation as the ultimate intersection of history and modern spectacle. By challenging attendees to treat their bodies as canvases, the “Costume Art” theme bridged the gap between 5,000-year-old artifacts and the cutting-edge designs of today. The evening proved that fashion is rarely just about what we wear — it is a living, breathing extension of the galleries themselves. As the exhibition opens to the public, the night leaves behind a trail of viral moments and profound artistic statements that will undoubtedly influence culture well into the future.
