Every year, the excitement for the holidays right after Halloween ends is what motivates many students to get through the rest of the school year. While some begin thinking about the holidays after Thanksgiving, many impatient holiday enthusiasts such as myself consider 12:00 a.m. on November 1 to mark the start of the holiday countdown.
Speaking of the holidays, we can’t forget about Mariah Carey’s annual TikTok. Known as a phenomenal singer with a dazzling voice, Carey is most known for her hit song “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” She has cleverly used her image of singing Christmas songs to create a tradition of creating a TikTok video every year just before the holiday season approaches. However, these aren’t just ordinary videos. These videos are created on a huge scale, filled with many professional editing effects, dramatic close-up shots, and different sound effects. Many teens look forward to these videos that come annually, and the suspenseful wait for the familiar TikTok video is what makes many viewers love this time of year even more.
In every annual video, Carey sings the words “It’s time” in a high-pitched voice and carries out the notes while the background of her song, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” starts playing. From elaborate sets to dressing up, she is completely decked out in the Christmas spirit. Every year, the scale of her videos seems to grow, and it leaves people wondering how she will create an even greater video the following year. However, she always seems to pull through.
Her first Tiktok started in 2019 on Instagram, where she uploaded a video of herself as the time changed from 11:59 p.m. on Halloween to midnight. That marked the start of the holiday tradition, and eventually Carey moved her videos from Instagram to TikTok. Her videos from 2022 and 2023 are the most well-known, and they have been included in many memes throughout the year. Her 2022 video shows a transformation from being a witch on Halloween to being on a reindeer while singing. Her 2023 video shows her breaking out of an ice cube, signaling the defrosting of Christmas.
In many of her videos, she is seen battling Halloween and waiting for the clock to turn. Her videos also sometimes include themes, such as a theme of the popular show Wednesday in 2024.
This year’s video was well-loved by viewers, and it currently has more than 25 million likes. Partnering with Sephora for her 2025 video, Carey incorporated CGI and many special effects. The video content itself included an elf stealing Sephora bags and trying to ruin Christmas, only to be eventually turned into a snowman. Her classic line was added at the end, and many people engaged with the video in high hopes for the holiday season.
Now, approaching December and winter break, there is much to look forward to, and Carey’s video is just the start. With the excitement of Halloween officially over, it is full steam ahead to the holidays. After all, who says that the holidays can’t start on November 1?
