Breaking News:
Picture this: I was sitting at the dinner table, eating breakfast and checking the latest NBA news when BAM! “Giannis Antetokounmpo is requesting a trade” slaps me right in the face. That’s right, folks, the two time MVP had a sit-down with his agent, Alex Saratsis, in which he reportedly discussed his future in Milwaukee, according to Bleacher Report.
As of now, one of the top suspected trade targets are the New York Knicks, as they reportedly were his favored landing spot if a trade happened, according to CBS Sports. Now, only one question remains: Where will Antetokounmpo go next?
Power Rankings:
Detroit Pistons:
Well, well, well. Call me shocked. Last time we checked up on the Detroit Pistons, they were leading the East with a record of 10-2. Surprisingly, the Pistons are still leading the East while sporting a 17-4 record.
According to Statmuse, Cunningham is averaging 28.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 9.3 assists on 54% true shooting. The team has also benefited from Jalen Duren, who has been averaging a cool 20 ppg while leading the team in rebounds. While their offense and team dynamics have improved, they still have their short-comings.
Currently, their defense is one of the best in the league (2nd in the league in Defensive Rating) and they are currently 7th in Net Rating. Overall, the Pistons have a bright playoff future, especially with their efficient defense, even though the three point shooting is at a low (28th in 3pm).
Toronto Raptors:
The Toronto Raptors are second in the East. How is this even possible? Last season, the Raptors finished with a 30-52 record as the 11th seed in the conference. That, if you’re new to the NBA, means they missed the PLAY-IN TOURNAMENT! Not even the playoffs!
They must’ve stolen some of the Pacers’ dark magic, because their 15-7 record is incomprehensible! Even the stats don’t agree with them. According to Statmuse, they’re 10th in Net Rank,12th in Offensive Ratings and 6th in Defensive Ratings. Brandon Ingram, where were these 21 ppg on the Pelicans? Scottie Barnes, where did this 60% true shooting come from?
This year’s Raptors’ squad can be best described as the underdog that came out of nowhere and now has a genuine chance of winning in the playoffs. However, a team does not simply shoot up nine seeds in one year. Is this Raptors team as much of a fluke as the Bulls?
New York Knicks:
It seems like the Knicks do this every year. They lose a couple of games, drop to the 5th seed, then go on a rampage to rise back to the 3rd seed. In fact, New York is only two games away from the 2nd seed (Statmuse).
All of their recent success, especially in the closing minutes of the game, have come from Jalen Brunson. The Clutch Player of the Year is averaging 27.6 ppg, 6.4 apg, and 3.2 rpg, which is pretty impressive for a 6 ‘2 guard. Making up for Brunson’s lack of height, starting PF Karl Anthony-Towns leads the team in rebounds, which is currently 12 per game.
As a team, the Knicks are great offensively, being fourth in the league in Net Rating and third in Offensive Rating. The area they struggle most in, however, is their defense (14th in DRtg). Normally, their defense is anchored by wings Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby, but it has now tanked due to OG’s injury, which has sat him for two weeks of action, according to NBA.com.
Miami Heat:
If I ever say that the Heat aren’t gritty or that “Heat Culture” isn’t real, then I give you full permission to slap me in the face. Miami is currently in the 4th seed of the Eastern Conference, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence.
The Heat have a history with tough play, which was exemplified with their ’23 finals run as the 8th seed. This same grit is shown by the current squad, led by Norman Powell, who has been averaging 25 ppg since his trade to the Heat and anchored by Kel’el Ware, who’s averaging 10.6 rpg and 1.3 bpg, according to Statmuse.
Really, anything can happen with this Heat team. They can continue their recent progress and make the playoffs, crash and burn to the 10th seed, or make the Conference Finals as a Play-In team. You never know with the Miami Heat.
Conclusion:
Anyone who says the Eastern Conference is boring and lacks competitiveness has clearly never seen any of these teams in action. It has two high-rising “underdogs” securing the top two seeds, a gritty Miami team ready to prove itself, and an energetic Knicks squad that’s ready to go past the Conference Finals, all ready and fighting for the chance to call themselves NBA Champions.
