Just as they “reached for the gun” in Chicago, THS students reached for their desired roles in the Chicago musical. The production is set in the Roaring Twenties as dancers tell the tale of fame, scandal, and class with jazz performances and countless musical numbers. The musical follows the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife who murders her husband and is sent to jail. The show explores the fabrication of the justice system and the musical and historical elements of the city of Chicago during this time period. Reece Holden (’25) embodies the flamboyant and charismatic character of the Emcee who is also known as the “Master of Ceremonies.”
What is Chicago about and tell us about your role.
So, Chicago is about these two women that are fighting for fame, and they’re trying to gain as much publicity as possible. It’s a story about conquering popularity. They’re trying to get the attention of Billy Flynn, a lawyer, and it’s just all about gaining fame. They say they are having a baby or that they committed a murder just to get everyone’s attention. For my part in the show, I am one of the head Emcees, so I introduce a lot of the scenes. I also play Harry, who is one of the husbands that gets shot for having an affair. I am also a part of the ensemble, so I do a lot of dancing.
What has your experience been like in Chicago?
I’ve loved it. I mean, the show is so iconic, so doing every number has been so fun. I just love the community we have here. Everyone works together. The dancing is great. Just the environment around me really inspires me to work hard. My favorite thing about performing is definitely telling a story, influencing a crowd, inspiring people. And I just love being up on stage and dancing and costumes and fashion, lights—the construction of it all is just amazing.
Have there been any challenges during preparations for the show?
Definitely the dancing. The dancing is very specific and just getting every beat and every move down perfectly is challenging. The kind of chemistry that we have helps us find a balance between each other as dancers and actors, so it always works out in the end. But, yeah, the dancing is pretty difficult.
Why should people come to the show?
People should come to Chicago because it is a story full of mystery, a story full of excitement, and there are just so many different aspects. You could be so entertained by it. The drama of it is just so enchanting.
