The Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival, commonly known as the Harbin Ice Festival, is the world’s largest ice festival in the world. Located in Heilongjiang, China, the festival is an annual event where millions of people gather to witness the sheer beauty and extravagance this place has to offer.
Harbin is a cold, Russian-influenced city, 1,000 kilometers northeast of Beijing and 400 kilometers south and west of the Russian border. It is the capital and largest city of Heilongjiang province, with around six million people in the city and around three million in the prefecture. According to Facts and Details, the city itself is an industrial city, with “onion-dome churches, blocky buildings, Czarist villas, some Japanese structures, and a handful of Chinese monuments.” It serves the interests of both the Chinese and Russians and is used as a communication center. It is also a destination where lots of Russian traders come to stock up on mass-produced goods to sell them back in Russia. Citizens living in this area don’t dislike the Russians; they see no problem with them and even pay four dollars to see a Russian swim troupe swim in an ice-covered lake which takes place during the festival.
The Harbin Ice Festival originated from the “local Harbiner traditional ice lantern and show garden party,” according to the festival’s online website. The history behind the Harbin Ice Festival can be tracked all the way back to the last century. First starting in 1963 as a small event, it showcased ice sculpting competitions in Zhaolin Park, and has now become a much bigger event. From 1978 to 1982, tourists came to see the traditions that were done in this tradition, specifically the ice lanterns. But, over time, according to the website, more and more local people began to enjoy winter activities such as skating, skiing, sledding, ice sailing, winter swimming, and snow sculpting. The consistent popularity ultimately gave the Propaganda Department of Harbin Municipal Party Committee an idea, where they brought Hong Kong and Macau officials to witness the multiple traditions that were in place, earning much praise. As a result, this tradition officially transformed into the Harbin Ice Festival. It is now the largest ice and snow festival in the world and lasts nearly two months, starting from early January to late February and bringing in over four billion dollars a year.
This year, the Harbin Ice Festival started on January 5 and will end in late February. The Harbin ice festival is essentially an “ice-made Disneyland,” bringing dreams of Frozen into real life. The ice castles, sculptures, everything the festival has to offer are magical.
The Harbin Ice and Snow World
The Harbin Ice and Snow World, a metropolis carved out of ice with unparalleled beauty, is the main attraction of the festival. The intricate and carefully designed sculptures are all brightened by the colors of light that make everything appear magical. Tourists can walk the halls of this magical ice castle and do much more, fulfilling the dreams of many Frozen fans. And if you visit at night, you can get surprised by the entire park being lit up in a colorful rainbow light.
Sun Island Park Snow Sculpture Art Expo
This Expo is a part of the Harbin Ice Festival and is one of the most popular events there is. Gigantic sculptures of buildings, creatures, and scenes made of ice are presented, showcasing the raw talent of these ice sculptors.
Zhaolin Park Harbin Ice Lantern Show
The other key highlight in this festival is the Ice Lantern show, which takes place in Zhaolin Park. Dating back to the very early days of this festival, this event is not just any ordinary event; it is a tradition that has been going on for decades. In this tradition, you can see ice lanterns with Chinese designs brightening the path and pavilions, creating an unforgettable scene.
To sum things up, the Harbin Ice Festival is a place one must go in their lifetime. It is a beautiful, icy paradise and an event you will never forget for the rest of your life.
