Before the roar of engines fills racetracks this 2026 season, Formula 1 teams are putting their cars to the ultimate test: the pre-season Shakedown. It’s the first glimpse fans get of new cars, new designs, and how ready each team is for the season ahead. Following five days of activity at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, teams seem prepared for the season’s first official test in Bahrain on February 11.
What is the Barcelona Shakedown? For drivers, it’s a full week to run their cars without limits—such as a 200 km cap—on promotional tries, giving teams the chance to check new components. It also provides their first opportunity to test the Formula 1 cars in real-world conditions rather than just in simulation
The 2026 Barcelona Shakedown places a strong emphasis on mileage, with teams prioritizing as many laps as possible to gather data and better understand their new cars. According to Formula 1, this year’s opening shakedown featured only 10 of the 11 teams, as production delays led Williams to skip the on-track running and instead complete a Virtual Track Test. Their boss, James Vowles, is hopeful the delay “won’t put them on the backfoot, with the team set to conduct a filming day before the six days of running in the desert.”
During the test, there were several key highlights. Primarily, Ferrari showed limited progress in the first three days of testing, but later on in the shakedown week the team ended up topping the times, with Lewis Hamilton setting the fastest time during one of his runs. Both drivers managed to cut their lap times considerably compared to the challenging final months of the 2025 season. “It was good, we went through our program, did everything we wanted to do, we pushed a little bit more as well, which was nice to feel a bit [of] the limit of this car and understand a bit more of it as well,” said Charles Leclerc, according to Autoweek. Mercedes also made a strong impression in Barcelona, topping the mileage charts and completing the number of laps equal to roughly around seven and a half race distance over the course of the week.
There had been some concerns this year that the first day of testing might simulate the opening day of the 2014 Jerez test, when hybrid power units were introduced. On that day, only a few teams managed to complete even a limited number of competitive laps. In contrast, during the 2026 shakedown, there were a few expected stoppages and technical issues—yet on the opening day, more than three teams surpassed the 100 lap mark, completing productive and effective testing programs.
While shakedown results don’t always reflect true performance, they still offer early clues about the season ahead. Some teams appeared confident and consistent, like Mercedes where George Russell and Kimi Antonelli were seen near the top of the sheets for most of the week. Adrian Newey’s first Aston Martin was also a big talking point of 2026. It was easily the most revolutionary car in Barcelona, according to Silverstone, “pushing the limits of packaging, aerodynamics and overall philosophy.” With the usual shakedown firmly in place, three distinct groups emerged in Barcelona, Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull all at the front of laps with Racing Bulls, Haas and Alpine not far behind, and new names on the grid, like Audi and Cadillac, faced learning moments during practice.
As the Barcelona Shakedown wraps up, teams now leave with something more valuable than fast lap times: data, direction, and early confidence heading into the official testing in Bahrain. While the results don’t guarantee success once the season begins, they offer a first look at which teams may have found early momentum and which still have work to do. With new designs, fresh driver pairings, and evolving strategies already shaping the tracks, the 2026 Formula 1 season is beginning to take form long before the first race lights go out. If Barcelona proved anything, it’s that the groundwork for a competitive and unpredictable season is already underway.
