Prom season is here, and Tenafly High School is hosting its senior prom on June 3, at Rockleigh Country Club. In order to attend this special event, the ladies need to get their magnificent dresses. But many find it to be the most stressful part. Prom dress shopping is one of the biggest events that happen during your senior year of high school, and many find it overwhelming. It doesn’t quite feel like the ordinary Disney prom scenes; it feels more like a part-time job than a fun activity.
The pressure to find the “perfect” prom dress is hard because you want to find that color you’ve been dreaming of since you were little, or the dreamy flowy dress that makes you feel like a princess. Prom dress shopping is so important because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to have and hold as a memory with your best friends. But with that excitement also comes the fear of being judged and the pressure of comparing your dress to everyone else’s. Many girls end up choosing a dress they think others will like instead of the one they truly love. One of the biggest challenges when it comes to picking a prom dress is trying not to wear the same style as everyone else, which can make picking the perfect dress even more stressful.
Moreover, shopping for a prom dress with friends can sometimes feel more enjoyable than shopping with your mom. Friends are often closer in age and may share the same fashion style, making the experience feel more relaxed and exciting. On the other hand, mothers may have different opinions about what looks best, which can sometimes create disagreements during the shopping process. While parents want to help, their ideas may not always match their daughters’ vision for prom night.
The best time to start looking for your prom dress is around mid February to late March. Starting early gives students more time to explore different styles, colors, and designs before stores begin to sell out. Shopping ahead of time can also reduce stress because there is less pressure to rush into a decision. In addition, buying a dress early lowers the chances of choosing the same style as many other girls, helping students feel more confident and unique on prom night.
Finding the perfect prom dress can create a lot of pressure and anxiety for girls who want to feel unique and confident on such an important night. Many students worry about standing out and avoiding the same colors or styles as everyone else.
“With prom being the biggest high school event, it has caused me the most stress,” Sara Snyder (’26), a senior at Tenafly High school, said. “The hardest part was finding the color I like, because I didn’t want to get the same color as most of the girls. I wanted to be able to stand-out on this special night.”
Beyond choosing colors and designs, the decision making process itself can add even more stress for students. Many feel torn between what they personally like and what they think others will approve of, making it harder to commit to one dress.
“I didn’t realize how stressful prom dress shopping could be,” Isobel Santiago (’26), said. “Being able to find the type of style dress I liked without second-guessing whether others will like it or not was hard. I wanted to choose something that made me feel comfortable, but at the same time I kept thinking about what everyone else might wear or say.”
Isobel’s experience reflects many of the common struggles students face while preparing for prom. Some of the biggest prom dress challenges at Tenafly High School include finding the right size, finding a unique dress, finding the perfect color, looking for good quality, matching jewelry and nails, looking for matching shoes, and alterations. With so many details to consider, finding the perfect prom dress is not as easy as it may seem.
